In Part 1, we covered five marketing habits that cost local businesses customers. If you recognized a few of your own, you're not alone. Most businesses are still doing at least one.
Here's what to do instead, with examples you can use this month.
1. Instead of keyword stuffing: write conversational
content
More people now search with full questions, whether they speak them into a phone or type them into ChatGPT or Google. Your website should answer those questions in plain language.
SEO example: The landscaper from Part 1 adds an FAQ section that answers "How much does lawn aeration cost?" and "When is the best time to overseed?" Clear answers like these are what Google's AI Overviews and tools like ChatGPT draw on when they recommend a business.
Paid search example: Replace long keyword lists with a few tightly themed ad groups using broad match and smart bidding. Track calls and form fills as conversions so Google learns which clicks turn into customers, and spend your time on the ad copy.
2. Instead of a forgotten profile: actively manage Google
Business Profile
For many customers, your Business Profile is the first page they see, so treat it like part of your website.
SEO example: Post updates weekly, add recent photos of your work and your staff, and check your hours before every holiday. Reply to every review within a few days. Profiles that are active and well reviewed tend to show up more often in local map results.
Paid search example: Link your profile to Google Ads so your address and directions appear correctly in your ads.
3. Instead of stock photos: short-form, authentic video
A phone, decent lighting and a useful tip are enough to get started.
Paid social example: The dental office replaces its stock photo with a 15-second vertical video of its hygienist sharing a whitening tip, then runs it as a Reel or Story ad to people within a few miles. Because it looks like a regular post, more people watch it.
Before-and-after videos, a quick shop tour or the owner answering a common question also work well.
4. Instead of follower counts: track engagement that leads
to sales
Focus on the numbers tied to revenue.
Paid social example: Run campaigns set up for leads, messages or website visits instead of followers. Then track shares, messages, calls and booked appointments. A post with 40 likes and six booked consultations is worth more than one with 400 likes and no bookings.
5. Instead of email blasts: AI-assisted personalization
Most email platforms now include AI tools that make it easy to send different messages to different groups, even for a small team.
Example: The gym splits its list into new leads, current members and former members. New leads get a free class, current members get a bring-a-friend pass and former members get a discount to come back. The platform's AI tools help draft each version and suggest send times, so the extra work is small.
Where to start
You don't have to change everything at once. Pick one of these, try it for 30 days and look at the results. Small changes made consistently add up, especially if your competitors are still using the old approach.
